Let’s be real — staying motivated at work isn’t always easy. Especially when the environment is toxic, management feels chaotic, and people around you are constantly leaving or getting laid off. I’ve been there, and some days, it honestly takes everything in me just to show up and keep going.
When things don’t go my way at work, it’s hard not to feel demoralised. But over time, I’ve figured out a few ways to lift my spirits and keep myself going, even when the circumstances aren’t ideal.
If you’re struggling right now, I hope these 7 personal strategies will help you find a bit of light and strength to push through too.

1. Celebrate Small Wins
When I solve a tough problem or get through a difficult conversation, I make a conscious effort to celebrate it — even if no one else notices. Small wins are momentum builders. They remind me that I’m capable, even if the bigger picture feels overwhelming.
2. Celebrate Milestones
Still in that job six months later? That’s a win. One year? Even bigger. When you're working in a tough environment, just lasting is an achievement in itself. I’ve learned to honour those milestones because they show resilience, and that’s something to be proud of.
3. Recognise Your Worth
It’s hard to feel motivated when your work goes unrecognised. I’ve been in situations where I poured my heart into something and got zero credit. But at the end of the day, I remind myself: I did my best. Just because others don’t see your value doesn’t mean it’s not there. One day, you'll find a place that truly appreciates what you bring to the table.
4. Let Go of the Stuff You Can’t Control
This one was hard for me. I used to let every unfair comment, every ridiculous decision eat away at me. But over time, I’ve learned that detachment can be empowering. The less I care about things that don’t deserve my energy, the lighter I feel.
5. Enjoy the Breaks (Seriously)
Lunch isn’t just a time to eat — it’s a reset. I use breaks to recharge, watch something funny, take a walk, or chat with someone who lifts my mood. It’s a small window to find a little joy in the day, and that can make a big difference.
6. Treat Yourself After Work
After a tough day, I treat myself like I would a friend. Whether it’s ordering my favourite meal, watching a comfort show, or just lying down guilt-free, I give myself something to look forward to. Because we all need a reward system, especially when no one else is clapping for us.
7. Remember Your “Why”
When everything feels bleak, I go back to my purpose. I remind myself that I’m working for something bigger — for my family, for my financial independence, for the freedom to enjoy life outside of work. Keeping that perspective helps me refocus when things get tough.
I hope these tips bring you the same sense of clarity and calm that they’ve brought me. If this resonates with you, feel free to like, share, or just send it to someone who might need a little encouragement today. 💛
You’re not alone — and you’re doing better than you think.
